Critique groups are a long-standing tradition within the SCBWI. They are regular meetings where authors or illustrators come together to share their work and provide and receive feedback. Unlike the manuscript/portfolio critiques by publishing professionals like agents, editors and art directors (which we offer at most of our events), critique groups are a give-and-take and are free, since they are run by the members themselves.
The rules for particular groups can vary depending on the desires of the group. Some meet weekly or monthly, some meet online, some groups e-mail work to each other for critique and then get together to share ideas. All members joining SCBWI have the opportunity to join a critique group and we are happy to facilitate. We will try our best to match you up with critique partners within our region or, if necessary, across regions.
Note: Only SCBWI members can sign up for critique groups!
Writers Critique Groups
Jane Warren is our Writers Critique Group Coordinator. SCBWI members who are looking for a group, but don't know any same-language writers in their area, can reach out to her to help you find a group and provide you with tools to get the most out of your experience. Jane invites both English and Dutch language writers to contact her through the Critique Group Request Form and she will do her best to make something happen for you, either with existing groups or through a new group. You can also contact her by email.
Illustrators Critique Groups
Özge Tigli Tasli is our Illustrator Coordinator and coordinates the critique groups for illustrators. Contact her to find out more about our illustrator critique groups and let her know if you would like to join one.
